Another Christmas Survived

Yes, major coup! Your beautiful brushwork deserves a wider audience. So howsabout getting coffee some time and... I won't say the hated rhyme... draw 'n guffaw? Design 'n whine? Illustrate 'n berate?

TRANSFORMERS '86: official kvetch #1

I have actually seen this film twice in recent years, as an adult - once at a RISD film fest, with booze, and once at the Clinton, with more booze. Booze does not make this a good movie. I'm galled that I've actually seen this more times than some of my favorite films. Avoid! Avoid!

Congrats on working with McSweeney's, Nate. Heartbreaking Work was such a wonderful book. And... Happy New Year!

man, i loved that movie. i still remember the day my best friend & i were dumped off by parents at the theatre... and when yr 11 yrs of age, shit, that soundtrack was like god's awesome hiccups. im even into the new movie tho mike bay will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes. pearl harbor was literally one of the worst movies i have ever seen... my neo-cortex still cringes when i think about it.

Our family was too poor to get me transformers for xmas... I got go-bots instead.

But I liked legos better anyway. More ROI for a kid.

Well how about THIS, Nate? I'm coming down to PDX in a few days. I'm going to drag your ass to a coffee shop and we're going to get some goddamned drawing done!

actually lilli just needs an intervention in negative acidity prevention -- something i always thought you could use! ha! suddenly yr mutual attraction comes crystal clear!

as a sidenote, reminding me of when you and lilli smooched loudly while i, single and horny and irritated as usual, getting all mad at hearing the love outside the bedroom/office/enclave of computer-dork-over-production-on-into-6am ----- wait, i forgot my sidenote. but jesus that was over TWO YEARS AGO, can you believe it?!

buy me a goddamn ticket south and i'll come visit you. seriously. i'm too broke. fake-broke. as in 8k on the card, and 1k in the bank, what does it mean?

it means MERRY FUCKING CHRIST-IS-DEAD-MASS! hoo ha &tc, &tc.

please do not email me beer.

@alec: i can relate, i have a ton of sketchbooks going, and i just give up. draw the best stuff in the lined notebook and the doodles in the $20 multimedia book, fuggit. korean adventure comic? oh man, maybe you should start harassing me relentless -- like with phone calls, emails, postcards, singing telegrams, whatever. i need harassment. i'm a lazy comic-drawing bastard.

I hear you on spreading out onto multiple sites Nate... I'm about to split up my web-presence onto my third site and it feels a little weird. I remember going through a similar thing with sketchbooks. At some point I had like three different sketchbooks going: one for "observational drawing", one for "finished" sketchbook comics (whatever that means) and one for rough ideas, etc. Eventually it became too much and I condensed it all into one. Now I'm back up to two. ACK!!!

Regardless of the frustration and questioning please know that *I* for one will be checking all of your sites and definitely look forward to your Korea adventure comic, even if we have to wait for it. Keep plowing forward! ONWARDS!!!

Sky Captain: 2 Hour Screensaver

I think this was a really good movie for its genre. After all it was expected to see 'futuristic concepts visualized' from the minds of people in the 60 or 30 (whenever it was written). So the cardbox robots and the propeller planes and flying aircraft carriers were pretty cool. And also one has to take a movie at face value, if it says 'Sci-Fi Adventure / Thriller' dont expect shakespere or a romantic movie lol. Over all I loved it and I think the performances by the cast fitted the movie / story perfectly.

Hopefully L'express was just making payment to the whoever laid out the article- from what I remember of American Society of Illustrators' guide to such matters, I think the default relationship (unless you sign a work-for-hire contract) is that the illustrator sells "first publishing right" and retains ownership of the image, but subsequent uses require further release, barring use for reviews, promotion, "typical copyright disclaimer you see everywhere". This use appears to fall under "review/promotion", so it probably doesn't trespass on your right as the creator/owner of the image. Never-the-less, if you make contact with the people making the decisions with your concerns, it does put you on their radars for possible future work on "industry pay scale", so you should totally do it, because they might not owe you a piece of their budget on this, but you might get some action from the exposure/contact.

It's called "limited copyright permission," right? As in, for $300, you can use this artwork in North America, for one publication, up until 2007. Then if they want to use the gfx in a European version in 2008, that's a separate fee. It sounds like yucky business, but it's better than starving, no? Like I should talk... all my photos are under a Creative Commons license. Heh.

I know I haven't always been great with giving you proper credit (sorry) but that using your art without permission or payment is BULLSHIT! Write angry letters! Shut those jerks down! This is not okay. They are stealing from you.

Amen on the gouache being a pain in the butt to work with. I think you did a good job with it though.

Evil landlords suck ass

Dan Shores is a terrible land lord in St. Joseph, Missouri, he is the greediest most absentee landlord in the entire city. He is also crazy because he inflates his financial estimates so much you would think he is the leader of Weimar Germany.
I rented from him for 10 months even though the lease said 12. For of all let me say that the lease is not a contract, alright, I took contract law and for a contract to be binding you must have mutual obligations of both parties. If my only option is sign to rent then it is not a contract check contract law. Well he never repaired anything, never asked me what I needed, gave me some free shit he was going to throw in the dumpster but never checked on me and I had to live next to his queerly odd son. So anyway the neighborhood is filled up with assholes and drug houses so I moved two months early but I moved within five days of realizing I could not pay my rent there as I had put down money on a new place on the other side of town. He now wants two months rent, $ 300 in damages, etc. and he never subtracted out my deposit from that estimate. He inflated the repairs saying it took him $ 65 to move the old refrigerator out and because my ice tea left a ring on the white cabients he would have to replace them and the old carpet in the kitchen because something spilled from the countertop on it while I was cooking, blah blah blah. He turned it over to a collection agency and I swear to God if I get one call he gets 10 from the following groups: Asbestos Cleanup, Jehovah Witnesses, Mormosn, SDAs, Branch B'hai, Harai Krishna, UPCI, whoever is crazy enough to bother him plus he will start getting mail from the ACLU to educate him as well. A lease is not a contract because one party cannot negotiate it is just a form I would like to see these form leases held up in court. My new landlord Uncle Milty rented me a place with loud next door neighbor and it is overran with nats, ants, leaky room, a broken back screen door I removed and the bathroom looks like something out of Dante's Inferno. IT is still better than my old place. Here is the message to landlords, you fuch with us tenants we can strike back and strike back hard, Amen.
